“Whether we realize it or not, statistics is a valuable aspect in the development of our modern life. Collected data can be extracted to create impactful analysis that could change on how we normally do things. Thus, it is vital that the use of statistics be appreciated and our office is in full support of the celebration of the 31st National Statistics Month” declared OIC-Director Aerrine Marie R. Reyes of RCMBXI.
RMCB XI has recently organized a film appreciation activity last October 1 where our employees watched statistically inspired films namely Moneyball and A Beautiful Mind.
“An appreciation I have from both movies is that statistics plays a significant role in our society. The movie “Moneyball” shows the challenges of two persons who used computer generated statistical analysis but is faced with limited budget by hiring players based on key performance statistics but were undervalued players and used these data to analyze score players’ potential and assembled a Major League baseball team. This led them to a record-breaking of 20 consecutive wins” expressed Sheila Rivera, an employee of the Branch.
The month of October has been declared as National Statistics Month since 1990 through Presidential Proclamation No. 647. One of the mission of this declaration was to promote, enhance and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society.
Every year, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) collects from the National Conciliation and Mediation Board data on accomplishments of conciliation-mediation cases. Their latest publication containing these datasets, the 2018 Compilation of Industry Statistics on Labor and Employment, can be viewed on the PSA website.
“We call on the academicians, policy makers, labor experts, arbitrators, students, and the public to purview and make use of the data that we made transparent to the public. We, ourselves, hope to use statistics to fulfill our mandate and our vision to make NCMB the center of excellence in enhancing harmonious relationships in every Filipino workplace.” conveyed Reyes.
