Health and Wellness Program a big hit in Davao Region
Region XI – The Association of Labor and Management Cooperation Practitioners (ALMACOP), Davao Chapter in cooperation with the National conciliation and Mediation Board – XI successfully conducts a learning event entitled “Learn More, Achieve More” Level Up 2016, hash tagged as #Healthy Worker=Happy Worker#.
The activity was themed as “Improving labor-management cooperation through health and wellness program”. There were 105 workers and executives from different companies in Davao Region who distinctively participated. This was held on July 8, 2016 at the Brokenshire Resort and Convention Center, Fr. Selga St., Madapo Hills, Davao City.
It was indeed unique, exciting and distinct because of the physical fitness session on zumba/dance exercise in the last part of the program. Overall, there were forty one (41) organized companies and eleven (11) unorganized companies with LMC that were enhanced.
The speaker, Mr. Parkash T. Mansukhani, MD, is an internist and pulmonologist based in Davao City. He is also a medical consultant at the Davao Doctors Hospital and founding chairman of Council on Health and Integrative Medicine of the Phil. College of Chest Physicians.
Dr. Mansukhani categorically emphasized that every worker must be driven on health, happiness and mindfulness. Mindfulness – the ability of paying attention in the present moment. “It’s something that we experience in the sunset, when we’re holding a baby in our arms, when we’re looking at the iceberg, when we are more than our limited self in the present” he further stated.
In addition, an exercise on breathing mindfulness or meditation was also introduced by Dr. Parkash. He impressed the holistic approach to health which is a combination of medical therapies and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. He presented the benefits of holistic medicine as well as the western medicine with which a person can choose from or combine. Thus, he emphasized that a person can choose for wellness and prevention through making one’s lifestyle healthy, vaccination, disease screening and adopting CAM approaches.
Indeed saying that happiness and mindfulness can go together. Happiness is a deep sense of flourishing that arises from an exceptionally healthy mind, as he quoted from Mr. Ricard.
The sharing and discussion was further clarified and enriched during the question and answer portion. Some participants opened up their health concerns and Dr. Mansukhani gave his knowledge in the field of medicine.
Two (2) ALMACOP Officers shared their best practices on health and wellness program of their respective company.
Mr. Rey Maquidato, HR Manager of Unifrutti Tropical Phils., Inc. and treasurer of the LMC Association shared that the “fab to fit program” as a priority program of the Managers of their company to motivate subordinates and workers and with corresponding incentives for those who meet the weight requirement, the size of waistline and the physical exercises required. Hence, a corresponding penalties for those who cannot meet the requirements; it was intended to help sustain the said program.
Mr. Bernabe Camay, HR Superintendent of Marsman Estate Plantation, Inc. and business manager of ALMACOP, Davao Chapter also shared his sense of humour which caught the attention of the participants; thus provided them the idea that LAUGHTER is good therapy at work.
The learning session ended with a very exciting basic “zumba session” which was ultimately enjoyed by most participants. Sheila A. Rivera, LIO-designate.
